Western Nelson is no stranger to tough, top-notch competition, as he faced his share of difficult opposition during his senior year as a distance runner at Burroughs High.

The St. Anthony-New Brighton School Board last week unanimously approved a football field renovation project for St. Anthony Village High School. Board Chair Barry Kinsey said the quality of the field was first discussed in the late 1980s before he served on the board.

After a two-year hiatus, the popular Vintage Run, a fundraiser for Sonoma Valley High School's cross country and track and field programs, returned in 2008 and this year's 5K race, which takes place during the Valley's Vintage Festival weekend, is set for 8 a.m. this Sunday, Sept. 27.

On Monday, Andy Nordland was announced as the new assistant track and field coach at UMKC. He held the same position at William Jewell College for four years before joining the Roos. "Well, there was an opening (at UMKC)," Nordland said with a laugh.

Bruce McBarnette, an attorney based in Sterling, has won international acclaim in his efforts at the World Masters Track and Field Championship in Finland Aug. 4. McBarnette won the high jump event for men over the age of 50, with a jump of 6', 2.75", or 1.9 meters.

Georgia assistant track and field coach Tonya Lee will be one of five individuals named to the Lady Vol Hall of Fame tonight in Knoxville, Tenn. The Mount Holly, N.J., native, competed for Tennessee's track and field team from 1988-92. She will be honored at a dinner tonight before being recognized during Tennessee's home football game with Auburn on Saturday night.
